English major Anna Merritt is studying abroad at Oxford, hoping to discover her life’s purpose, when she befriends two freshers: Nicholas Diggs, whose businessman father has indoctrinated him that function equals value, and gregarious Edmund Mitchell. Dr. Barney, Anna’s eccentric tutor, encourages her to trust her perceptions about literature and life.

One day, Dr. Barney warns Anna that Nicholas is in danger…then disappears. His instructions lead to a mysterious guide, a post-term European tour, and a shocking secret that Anna must choose whether or not to reveal to a friend.
