Even for veteran detective Jarrold Banyon, this is a baffling case. Two teenagers, whom friends describe as intelligent and stable—and who are new born-again Christians—have fled, allegedly taking two guns and stealing a valuable Aztec idol.

Banyon doesn’t trust his employers, who seem to care more about the idol than about their runaway daughter. Banyon senses the modern-day Romeo and Juliet are in great danger.

To save them, he must uncover a grisly secret of the past or an ancient evil will be unleashed on the Earth.
