The Reluctant Immigrant

Everyone has secrets. Rika’s are hidden in her new-fangled carrying purse…

Texas, 1846

The last thing sixteen-year-old Frederika Mueller wanted to do was to leave her beautiful home in Germany for the rugged and mosquito-laden Texas frontier. Now, instead of singing lessons and her favorite dance shoes, she’s stuck walking next to oxen and a covered wagon in the ugliest shoes imaginable…and listening to her little sister whine. With threats of Indian attacks and two mean criminals warning her they’re watching her, could things get worse? But then, of course, there’s Engel, from the next wagon over, who does chicken imitations of his mother, and Karl, a handsome and cocky German soldier who seems to have his eye on her….

Naomi Mitchum

Naomi Mitchum, a writer and public speaker, often writes from her vacation home in the Texas Hill country. “I became interested in the German settlement history of the area when I heard men of the community speaking German at their morning coffee Klatsch at a local restaurant,” Naomi says. “I visited Indian Point, Rika’s point of Texas entry, and traced the wagon trails to New Braunfels. Along the way I experienced mosquito hordes, ankle-deep mud, beautiful landscapes, and visited the point of the long-gone Guadalupe River Ferry.”

Degreed in Christian education (Baker University), Naomi is currently Coordinator of Special Needs Ministry at a large church. She also writes in the field of disabilities. Books to her credit include Harps in the Willows: Strengths for Reinventing Life (Chalice Press; reviewed in Publisher’s Weekly and used in Salvation Army counseling centers after 9/11) and Abingdon’s Intergenerational Programs and Fun with Drama and More Fun with Drama (Abingdon). She has published continuously since 1979 in several fields, including mainstream and religious magazine articles, curriculum and teaching packets for teenagers, adults, and teachers (Graded Press), online articles concerning special needs and children and worship (Methodist General Board of Discipleship) and plays (most recently, Help Me! I’m Bent at Houston Country Playhouse)
